The Unfinished Painting

Sinhala literature was one of my favorite subjects that I studied in school. Literature creates creative as well as sensitive people. When we studied Sinhala literature in school we came across poems, stories etc. of different tastes. Meanwhile Nonimi Siththama short story is one of the story that touched my heart the most. It is an excerpt from K. Jayathilaka's collection of Nonimi Siththama short stories. The main character in that story is Asanga. Malani is his wife who met him at Asanga's Art class and he fell in love with his student Malani. At that time he drew a painting of Malani and he couldn't finish it. Asanga is a talented painter and Malani can also draw to some extent. But society accepts the useless, not the talented. So the story ends with Asanga becoming a businessman and Malani stealing his unfinished painting and becoming a famous  artist. But Asanga endured everything and remained quiet. Scam, love and society kill great artists. I also love to be an artist and it's my dream. But the day I read this story, I was scared for the first time about my future. Is this really the fate of the artist in the society? Somehow by the time I finished reading this story I started to fall in love with Asanga a lot. But I hated Malani and this society. I would like to be an artist like Asanga only if people like Malini and this society change. I never want to be an artist in a place like that.

My Hybrid Art

The Hybrid art is one of my favorite art forms. It adds a different depth to the painting. I like to hybridize the paintings of famous artists and give them different  meanings. It's very joyful thing. So I love it so much.

This is my first Hybrid painting.  I named it Hybrid Mona Lisa and for this I have mixed Leonardo's Mona Lisa, Van Gogh's The Starry Night, Picasso's cubism and Mondrian's geometry.

This is my second Hybrid painting and I named it as the Girl with sun flowers. For this I have mixed Johannes' Girl with a Pearl Erring , Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Picasso's cubism and Mondrian's geometry.

This is my latest  Hybrid painting. I named it Mysterious Lady with an Ermin and for this I have mixed Leonardo's Lady with Ermin, Paul's Senecio, Picasso's cubism and Sri Lankan traditional Gini Raksha mask.

I think that fits well. I'm still in the early stages of Hybrid art. So I still have a long way to go. I know I have no right to call these paintings mine. Because only the composition of these paintings is mine . I don't want to own them. but I want to live in these paintings .

Seasons in Life

Spring is coming
The flowers are blooming
The trees are filled with fruits
But all of this change with time
Spring does not come to stay every day
Droughts will come
flowers will wither on the trees
Fruits will fall off
But this will also change with time
So
The trees that bore flowers and fruits in the Spring,
If they survive the drought,
Flowers will bloom and they will bear fruits again
Because just like Spring, drought will not stay forever
And the spring will come again.

Mr. Solias Mendis

Art is a wonderful thing. It creates sensitive people. As time goes  by fast, it teaches disciplined people. There are many good examples of this in our country. Among them Mr. Solias Mendis is an unforgettable charecter. Mr. Walimuni Solias Mendis is a great artist who revolutionized the art in Sri Lanka. Among his creations, the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is like his finest art gallery. He has created many paintings and sculptures in here. He spent about 18 years creating all of this. Unfortunately before he could create more paintings, insensitive people frustrated his art life. The contribution council of Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya commissioned German artist Carl Casman to paint the painting on the back of the Buddha statue and its surroundings. Mr. Solias Mendis, who came down from the scaffolding that day decided not to draw again and left industry. Finally he donated his  everything for future generation and on October 1, 1975 he closed his eyes forever.

Be strong

Some trees have dried up due to drought.
Instead of the green leaves of the past, only dry leaves are left.
Their branches have decayed.
So again, those trees have no hope of flowering.
The shadow of death has fallen on them.
But as always, there is no shortage of bird songs.
They behave the same way today as they did on those branches before.
There is no difference.
Their resting places may have changed.
But they trust their own wings.
If you trust your wings, changes in the environment does not matter anymore.
So be strong.
Then whatever is happening around you becomes irrelevant.

My Portrait Arts

Art is a wide range of activities that requires creative imagination of artists. If art is an ocean, I doubt that  I have even taken a drop of water from it yet. My favorite part of art is Portrait art. From the time I did not even know how to hold a pencil correctly, I started drawing portraits. In those early days I drew portraits as my mind desires. After that I chose some person who looks similar to that shape and I told everyone I drew those person. My parents still laugh, reminding me of the work I did in my childhood. I think no matter how much I draw, I still have a lot to learn about Portrait art. when I was at home after finishing my o/l exam,  I started practicing Portrait art as a self-study. I'm still learning Portrait art since then. In the early days I drew a Portrait arts with normal pencils. After that I experimented with graphic pencils, color pencils, pastels,  poster color, watercolor, and mix media. These are very interesting. So I love it very much. I want to go further in the field of Portrait art  and I want to become a realistic Portrait artist. It's one of my biggest dreams.

Past & Present

I have loved painting since I was a child. The main reason for that is my dad. He also loves painting very much. But he wasn't allowed to go ahead with painting by his parents. So he drew as a hobby. When dad draws a painting, I look at it and try to draw the same painting. It's like a beautiful match. My dad was the first to give my hand a pencil and a painting  brush. He is my first Art teacher. At that time, my dad's dream was going to Heywood Institute of Art. But he couldn't achieve it. Then that dream became mine and I worked hard for it. Now I am an undergraduate in faculty of Visual Art, at University of Visual and Performing Arts. So I think I made my dad's dream come true. Dad and I have a lot of paintings collected from the past to the present. There are still great lessons to be learned from every line in each of those paintings. Dreams do come true. And the present  is more beautiful When   it's filled with past memories and dreams.

Goddess Saraswati

Goddess Saraswati is a deity mainly associated with Hinduism. Not only Hindus but many people worship her. According to their beliefs, she is the supreme deity of knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning. She is also known by many names such as Sharada, Savitri, Brahmani, Bharadi, Bani, Chandrika etc. Many artists have given various images to goddess Saraswati. I also created a new look for her. This is the painting I drew for her.

It's a Mandala Art. Goddess Saraswati is created very young here. She is dressed very youthfully. She has 4 arms. There is a book in one hand and a rosary in the other hand. The other 2 hands are holding a harp. She sits on a white lotus flower and radiates light like the sun. Water and fire flow around her with control. A design like a beautiful peacock feather is behind her. Each of these sections has a deeper meaning than it seems. It is up to you to feel and discover it.

Vishama Bhaga

No matter how many movies are made, there are very few movies that touch our hearts. Among such movies, "Vishama Bhaga" is a wonderful creation.  It can be described as an heartwarming glimpse into the children’s world. Not all children are the same. They have various Capabilities and talents. But the school is always trying to create the same kind of people. They measure every child with the same measurements. It is also the main reason why art is ridiculed in a society where subjects such as mathematics and science are highly valued. Can people move forward just by mathematics? Is art really useless? No matter what people think, people can't live without art. Sensitive people are created through art. Insensitive people are like robots. There is a big story inside this movie. But I don't know how to explain it all. If teachers can identify children like Ruwansiri among children like Kamalsiri, this world will undoubtedly be a more beautiful place.

Dreams like Nelli

Dreams make people live

People live for dreams

One dream is the path to another dream

So

We chase after dreams

Hanging on to those dreams

Like Nelli

Bitter at times

Sour at times

Somehow finally

Delicious

And

Above all

Good for health

Loving Taxila

In this life journey we stay in different places. Horana is my favorite place among those. I have passed through. Because Horana is a beautiful city that has changed my life. Horana Taxila is one of the most memorable and wonderful places in my life. There is a beautiful world inside a large black gate surrounded by a white wall; the benches under the Na trees by the side of the field, the stone fence, the row ow Pine trees, Araliya flowers and trees filled with fruits. It is a feeling that needs to be experienced. Taxila is a place where education, knowledge, sports, brotherhood, love, care are all intertwined. Almost everyone who has read "Golu Hadawatha" novel by Karunasena Jayalath has lived in Taxila for at least a moment. Although Dammi and Sugath have changed, Taxila is still the same. I will always love mother Taxila.
